Showtime presenter, Terry Warren, is a dab hand with the bells and rings every week at Christ Church, Wanstead, E11. It’s hugely different from playing Gene Kelly on his programme but just as satisfying. Campanology, the proper name for church bell ringing, is also known amongst ringers as ‘The Exercise.’ It certainly does exercise both brain and body though may not be suitable for ex-patients at Whipps Cross. A typical tower will have 6 or 8 bells ranging in weight from 1 cwt. to 36 cwt – so a far cry from lifting CDs!
Terry has been with Whipps Cross Radio since 1988 and has been pulling the ropes since 1972. So far he hasn’t dropped too many clangers.
‘It’s just another form of music really, that is unless you have a Sunday morning hangover’, says Terry. Perhaps on his next show he’ll be playing Saved by the Bell, The Bells of Rhymney, Liberty Bell or Jingle Bells – or perhaps not!
